Supervising Transmission Line Construction and Substation Upgrades

The Challenge

The project involved the construction of a new transmission line spanning 50.3 miles and upgrades to six substations, totaling $81.5 million across 23 infrastructure projects. Our team was tasked with supervising the planning, design, and execution phases of the project, managing all associated risks and issues.

  • Property Acquisition and Soil Borings: The project required the acquisition of multiple properties and areas for soil borings, necessitating negotiations with various landowners and entities. Delays in this process could hinder project engineering and progression.
  • Project Delays: Landowner issues resulted in a two-month delay in project timelines, potentially impacting costs and overall project schedule.

The Solution

  • Streamlined Project Management Activities: Think Power’s involvement streamlined project management activities, enhancing efficiency in project monitoring, reporting, and decision-making. Our team leveraged technology and expertise to manage the project throughout the engineering phase and project closeout.
  • Comprehensive Schedule Development: Think Power actively participated in framing schedules for Transmission, Substation, Major Underground, Civil, and Distribution components, incorporating built-in logic for each portion of the project. Detailed schedules and technology dashboards enabled real-time progress updates and monitoring of key performance indicators, optimizing project efficiency and reliability.
  • Proactive Risk Management: Through weekly look ahead sessions and detailed schedules, Think Power identified the possibility of project delays due to landowner issues with sufficient lead time to mitigate potential cost variances. This proactive approach to risk management enabled timely decision-making and action, minimizing the impact of delays on project outcomes.

Key Benefits

  1. Improved Efficiency: By streamlining project management activities and leveraging technology-driven solutions, Think Power improved overall project efficiency and effectiveness. Our comprehensive schedules and proactive risk management approach ensured timely project progression and minimized disruptions.
  2. Improved Decision-Making: Our technology dashboards provided stakeholders with real-time insights into project progress and performance, enabling informed decision-making and proactive problem-solving. This enhanced visibility and transparency facilitated effective communication and collaboration among project teams.

The Results

Despite challenges related to property acquisition and project delays, Think Power’s proactive approach to project management and risk mitigation ensured the successful planning, design, and execution of the transmission line construction and substation upgrades. By leveraging technology and expertise, Think Power optimized project efficiency, minimized delays, and delivered value to the client.
