Anchor Layout Adjustment Enables Seamless Utility Design in High-Value Development

The Challenge

During staking operations for a critical underground distribution project, a Think Power Solutions designer encountered an unexpected obstacle: a newly installed 8-foot I-beam fence directly interfered with the planned location of one of the anchors for an overhead riser pole.  This conflict had the potential to delay progress, trigger redesign requests, or require costly removals, all of which would impact the project’s budget and schedule. Because the fence had already been installed, coordination and field adaptability became essential to avoid disruption.

Root Cause Analysis

  • Site Interference: Newly constructed fencing was not reflected in earlier design data.
  • Anchor Obstruction: One of the two planned support anchors could not be installed in its designated location.
  • Design Constraints: All field modifications needed to adhere to engineering and structural standards for safe riser pole installation.

The Solution

Field-Based Design Adjustment

Rather than halt work or request fence removal, the Think Power Solutions designer evaluated the site conditions in real time and modified the anchor layout on-site.

Engineering Compliance Maintained

By reducing the anchor spacing within acceptable tolerances, the team maintained full compliance with PEC standards while resolving the obstruction.

Project Timeline Protected

This immediate field solution avoided rework, design escalation, or permit delays, keeping the broader development’s construction schedule on track.

Key Benefits

  • Zero Delays: Field decision-making kept the project moving without interruption.
  • Cost Avoidance: No redesign or demolition was required.
  • High-Value Site Coordination: Reinforced Think Power Solutions’ ability to adapt within complex, high-stakes developments.
  • Engineering Confidence: Adjustments were made without compromising structural performance or safety.

The Results

The underground distribution design was executed as planned, with the adjusted anchor layout enabling safe and compliant riser pole installation. The client avoided both construction delays and unnecessary costs. The case illustrates the value of having experienced utility design professionals onsite, capable of solving field conflicts without triggering project disruption.
